Sydney Bui – Junior Candidate

Junior Candidate

What are you looking forward to most in homecoming week?

“I look forward to seeing the events that StuCo has put their hard work and dedication into, like powder puff, buff puff, and the homecoming dance. Just to see that all happen. And how that will affect our students.”

What irrational fear do you have?

“I’m really scared of holes. Like, a lot of circles together. Lydia, Evan and I were getting sand from the baseball field, and there were so many holes in the sand… Yeah. I’m gonna leave that there.”

In one word, how would you describe yourself?

“Striving.”

What is one accomplishment you are really proud of?

“I was on a mission trip, as a journalist. I love journalism. I used those investigation skills I learned, to talk to students that I was working with, and it led from one thing to another and I got the principal fired because he was smuggling money from the government. He was ruining children’s education so they couldn’t go to college, and it was a whole thing, but they deserved better. It was in a village in Belize.”

What is one thing you really want to do but can’t afford to?

“I want to major in theology and business, so I want my priority to be my work, and it’d be really cool if I could have enough money and could start a nonprofit organization that works directly for youth ministry because that area and aspect of faith doesn’t get much attention.”

What is something about you that not many people know?

“It’s hard for me to be vulnerable and to put myself out there and for me to be able to put myself in new situations. I don’t really like change.”

Who is your favorite teacher at West?

“I could not answer. I can talk about the teacher I spend the most time with, which is Mrs. Walker. I’m with her for yearbook. She’s pretty amazing. She’s taught me so much, even outside of journalism. Like what it means to keep your integrity, and how to uphold yourself in situations where people can try to attack that.”
