Football season ended Nov. 11 against Olathe Northwest, wrapping up the fall sports season.

Even though it wasn’t the outcome they wanted, the team had many other victories and successful moments that made up the season.

The first victory in the season was against Lawrence Free State on Sept. 2, with West scoring a total of 33 points and beating Lawrence by a wide margin.

They gained another win against Shawnee-Mission Northwest, beating them 53-49.

“The Shawnee Mission Northwest game was just a shoot-out battle on both sides throughout the entire game,” senior player Vincent Gatschet said. “And we won.”

The season was filled with other memorable moments, especially for the seniors whose high school football careers concluded with this season.

“It’s always just fun being with the guys and having fun with the team,” Gatschet said.

The team beat Blue Valley 42-20, winning the title of regional champions on Nov. 3.

“It felt great beating Blue Valley,” senior quarterback Mason McGavran said. “Of course, the next game didn’t go our way, but to get one of those plaques, it was a good feeling.”

McGavran also got to spend his senior year playing with his brother Micah, a sophomore on the team.

“Connecting with my brother, that was really special to me,” McGavran said.

As the season came to an end, players chose to focus on the good memories they had with the team.

“On the bus rides home, we always like to sing random songs,” Gatschet said. “A lot of Bruno Mars. Everyone is in a good mood then.”

Gatschet ended the season with nineteen touchdowns, while McGavran had the highest amount of total rushing yards per game, having 126.4 yards per game.

Olathe West’s Varsity football won six out of eight games and ended in third place in the Sunflower League, concluding the 2022-23 season.
