As school comes to an end, so do spring sports. With many of the programs being successful in the past, high expectations are held for their programs throughout their season. Spring sports at West consist of girl’s swim and dive, boys’ tennis, girls’ soccer, baseball, softball, track and field and boys’ golf.
Spring Sports Recap
Girl's Dive
The girls' swim team has been very consistent placing during their meets throughout their season. The varsity team will take on state starting May 16. They are bringing two divers, Senior Gabby Clinkinbeard, and Sophomore Milly Jenson, for the first time in school history.
“Our JV girls had an AMAZING season and showed so much growth. Our two Varsity divers have consistently been placing in the Top 16 at our big meets and I am ready to see what they accomplish on Thursday,” Parker said.
Girl's Swim
The girls’ swim team, along with the girls’ dive team, will also make an appearance at the state meet on May 16-18. They are bringing swimmers in five different events and three of the swimming relays. As the girl’s dive team is making history, so is Senior Lydia Fink in the 200 freestyle as she is a Sunflower League champion.
“ Continue to build the program by growing the number of athletes on the team, continuing to push to get better each day and make sure our athletes are having fun and growing together as a team,” Ruport said.
Boy's Tennis
The boy’s tennis team finished off their season with being third place in the city and sixth in the Sunflower League. This team has improved since last season after losing some seniors and placing higher this season than last season.
“I’m happy with how the season went, and we want to work hard in the offseason to improve for next year,” Mnich said.
Girl's Soccer
The girl’s soccer team continues in their postseason as they play for the regional championship on May 16. Having a young team, they have been very successful throughout their season going 12-3-1 in their regular season.
“ We have goals of winning regionals this week and going to state,” Trump said. “We have a young team this year, and our goals every season are to return to state and try to win the Sunflower League.”
Boy's Baseball
The boy’s baseball team, also known as the Wolfpack, showed major improvements from their past season. With a new head coach Austin Fisher, he was able to lead his team to go 24-1 in their regular season. They will take on the state tournament on May 23 at Hoglund Stadium.
“ Our goal is to win our league and the state tournament. We have won the league so the hope is we can go into next week and win 3 more games, ” Fisher said.
Boy's Golf
As the boy’s golf season came to an end they are very pleased with their results by winning regionals and the Sunflower League. In the past seasons, their goals had consisted of winning what they had just accomplished, and for next season they hope to improve as a whole.
“ We couldn't be happier with how the season turned out. All the hard work and dedication really paid off,” Aldrich said.
Girl's Softball
The girl’s softball team started their season with almost a whole new team since they lost many seniors last season and only had one senior in the 2024 season. Finishing their season with an 18-8 regular season record, assistant coach Taurean Guzman was pleased with how the team fought this year.
“ Our biggest accomplishment was tying for league champs this year,” Guzman said. “We weren't even able to do that last year when we won state, so we clearly continued that expectation of winning and making great accomplishments even after winning the ultimate title. It just shows that these girls are never satisfied, which is a great thing to watch and a great catalyst for winning and success.”
Track and Field
The track and field team will continue their season at the state meet from May 31 to June 1 in Wichita, KS. The boy's team took home the regional championship for the first time and the girls finished 2nd at the regional meet on May 16.
“The boys have never been regional champions,” Bell said. “Both teams had most of the athletes qualify for state that is next week in Wichita.”
