On Friday, Aug. 30, students went to the main gym during their math classes to see all the activities available to join.
The activity fair is a way for students to showcase all the clubs and teams our school has to offer. Clubs and activities displayed information and students got to walk around to learn about them.
The activity fair makes getting involved very simple. Students can walk up to the club, connect with the sponsors and members, and quickly get to know different people around the building.
Principal Jay Novacek advocates for student involvement as a part of the high school experience.
“One of the things we have found is that students that are engaged, involved, find ways to do things within our school, are better connected,” Novacek said. “They’re happier, they’re healthier, they have better grades and they enjoy their experience at Olathe West a lot more.”
The activity fair allows students to find a community within their hobbies and interests. There are plenty of opportunities for students no matter what they enjoy. Here are a few activities offered at West:
Having an opportunity like the fair at the beginning of the school year helps students of all grade levels. Whether this is their first year and they’re trying to find a group like Freshman Mikaela Strange…
“It’s really nice, a lot to explore and there’s many options of what you can do here. I’m interested in the fishing club and the vet club,” Strange said.
…or they got to learn about clubs they didn’t know were offered like Sophomore Lizzy Price.
“I thought it was a fun opportunity to see clubs that I didn’t think I’d be interested in,” Price said.
Or maybe they have an idea for something new.
“I feel like we should have a tennis stand,” Junior Kellen Aldrich.
The fair provides something for all students to get involved in. From making connections to getting out of one’s comfort zone, it’s never too late to find a niche. Principal Novacek puts the importance of involvement into a few short words.
“There’s always three types of people in a high school: those who watch it happen, those who wonder what happened, and those who make it happen,” Novacek said.
