On Thursday, Sept. 26 football faced the Olathe South Falcons. The Owls battled throughout the game and eventually left ODAC with the win.
Offensively, the game was book-ended by two touchdown drives at the start and end of the game. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Kruse found ways to keep the offense in the back and forth game.
However, it was the running game was the driving force for the offense. Junior Josh Foland and sophomore Eli Ables carried the running workload, with Kruse contributing with his legs. Senior Tevyn Gasaway had some rushing attempts as well.
The play of the game for the offense however, was when the Owls pulled out a little trickeration. Senior receiver Mason Barnard caught a lateral from Kruse and threw it deep for a wide open touchdown to junior Sam Krzykowski.
Overall, the offense was pretty good on the night, but the defense might have been even better.
While the offense couldn’t get much going during the early stages of the second half, the defense held the Falcons to 10 points in the second half. The defensive line was stout against a big and physical Falcon offensive line. Even with senior standout Chase Campbell out with injury, the defense didn’t lose a step. Senior James Dorsey and junior Connor Tracy came up with big tackles down the stretch for the defense.
Sophomore Cash Warren was an anchor in the linebacking corps all night. Warren notched an interception and had numerous tackles on defense and special teams.
Overall, football battled during this game. Even when they were down, the lead wasn’t insurmountable. Through four games now, the Owls sit at 2-2 and 2-1 in the Sunflower league. Football has a chance to top their 2023 win total next week.
The Owls take on the Lawrence – Free State Firebirds next weekend on Friday, Oct. 4 in their homecoming game at CBAC.
