Coming off a blowout win against Paseo Academy, the Owls walked into Shawnee Mission South looking to advance to 3-0 against the Raiders on Friday, Dec. 13.
Early in the game, the Owls struggled to rebound the basketball, which helped the Raiders to get out to an early seven point lead in the second quarter. Sophomore Colton Nichols and senior Brady Collar got the offense going early, scoring 13 of the team’s first 18 points.
When senior Sherron Woodbury and Collar got into foul trouble later into the second quarter, the Raiders took advantage. The Raiders took advantage of the Owls turnovers as well, and grew their lead to 10 at the half.
The rebounding issues and turnovers continued in the second half, along with shots not falling for the Owls. In the third quarter, the Owls only scored seven points, their lowest mark so far this season. With all those factors combining at once, the Owls went into the fourth quarter down by 20 points.
With the huge lead, the Raiders looked to run out the clock for an easy victory, but Woodbury didn’t let the Owls go down quietly.
He went on a hot streak in the quarter, scoring 13 points in a row while the Raiders only scored two. After the run, the Owls were only down seven with three minutes left in the game. Woodbury finished with 16 points.
The short deficit was short-lived, however, as the Owls went cold again from the field. Meanwhile, the Raiders extended the lead back to 15 points.
As the clock ran down to zero at Shawnee Mission South, the Owls’ record fell to 2-1. The leading scorers for the Owls were Woodbury with 16, Nichols with 10, Collar and sophomore Cash Warren both racked up eight points.
The Owls look to rebound when they go on the road to play Mill Valley on Friday Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
