The time has come for one of the most iconic events of the year: prom. A fun-filled night with your friends…but it’s also filled with fees.
The average prom dress can range from $100 to $700, while suits range from $100 to $500, depending on whether you’re renting or buying. Adding those prices with shoes, accessories, flowers, and tickets, you could be spending well over $1,000 on this night alone.
If you’re paying for this yourself with a part-time job or are given a small budget, these kinds of prices can be stress-inducing. But there are many ways you can have the night of your dreams while sticking to a budget.
The dress or suit is the star of the show for prom attire, and junior Alexandra Dollmann has had a successful search thrifting “the dress” for her first prom.
“Overall, I’ve spent 35 dollars. It was easy since there’s one section to look through,” said Dollmann.
Dollmann also shares the importance of reusing things you already have. “I checked what heels, jewelry, and nail polish I already had that would work with my dress. Knowing what you have before buying something new can help with keeping your expenses down,” said Dollmann

Most people only wear their prom dresses once, leaving the selection at thrift stores to be diverse.
Store manager of Major Thrift, Kimberly Towner shares the options they have at their store.
“Now is the busy prom season so we will have several dresses, several suits and many shoes to choose from. About 50% of the prom dresses and suits that we get into the store we can sell,” said Towner.
With a wide selection and budget friendly prices, you could get your entire outfit for around $30. These savings are huge compared to buying from retail.
Though prom can be stressful, you shouldn’t have to stress about buying your outfit. Leave the financial stress at home and dance the night away!
