On a brisk, overcast evening, students flocked through the gates of CBAC for the Owls’ season opener. The stadium was filled with hope for Lions fans and Owl fans alike.
The Owls leaned on their running game through the back-and-forth affair. Seniors Brody Hale and Josh Foland tallied 46 and 41 rushing yards, respectively. Sophomore Cabe Roberson also added 36 yards on six carries.
Senior Sam Krzykowski was crucial to the Owls’ offensive plan against Lawrence High School. With less than four minutes left and the home team behind 28-31, Hale connected with Krzykowski for a 65-yard touchdown less than three plays after the Chesty Lions put up a field goal to take the lead. The senior wide receiver finished with five receptions, 98 receiving yards and three touchdowns, along with a two-point conversion that he hauled in during the second quarter.
Junior Cash Warren was flying around the field. In the second quarter, he grabbed a kickoff and took it all the way to the endzone untouched to put the Owls up 15-7. He also made big plays on defense, recording 15 tackles with one of them for a loss.
In the fourth quarter of a tight 35-31 game, the Owls’ defense needed a stop. On fourth and three, one more play would lock up an Owls win. The Owls came with pressure towards the Lawrence quarter, but the receiver was wide open. Fortunately for West, the receiver couldn’t hang on to the pass, and the Owls locked up a 35-31 victory.
The Owls look to avenge last season’s 42-12 loss when they go take on Blue Valley West on Friday, Sept. 12. The Jaguars come into the game 0-1 with a 21-0 loss to St.Thomas Aquinas on Sept. 5.
