In 2024, the Olathe West girls’ golf team made it to state. Madison Wegmann and Alaina Evans were the two to qualify for the second day of state, both shooting in the low 80s. With seniors Madison Wegmann and Maddie Gunthner leaving, it left two open spots, giving high hopes to incoming freshmen. Tryouts for girls’ golf were on Monday, Aug. 18, where the girls played at Prairie Highlands.
The aftermath of tryouts left Savannah Cagle the only qualifying senior left on the girls’ golf team this year. Two private school girls also joined— their school did not offer a girls’ golf team and the girls qualified after day two of tryouts.
“I’m pretty confident in the team this year, we have some pretty good new players, so I’m pretty excited,” Alaina Evans said.
She believes that with the additions to the team this year, it will end in overall success for girls’ golf. Each year, Olathe West girls’ golf has gained popularity. At the beginning of 2022, girls’ golf tryouts were so in need of players that tryouts didn’t have cuts, and anyone who joined automatically made the team. This year, there were so many talented new girls that it was a competition to secure a place on the team, ending in two seniors being cut.
This is the new era of Olathe West golf, and with the new additions to the team, we asked Savannah Cagle her thoughts on how she believes golf will go.
“I think that a lot of the girls on the team have been playing over the summer and playing in tournaments, and I think that we will be able to do it,” Cagle said.
