Bridgerton Review
January 18, 2021
Netflix has given us yet another holiday surprise, a new period drama: “Bridgerton.”
While Bridgerton has only been out for 22 days now, it has already had 67 million views, making the show Nexflix’s fifth-biggest original series of all time.
After it’s release on Dec. 25, 2020, it has already taken the number one spot on Netflix in 76 countries, surpassing “The Queen’s Gambit”. “Bridgerton” even made the top 10 in all 190 countries that Netflix is available in, with the exception of Japan.
“Bridgerton” follows Daphne Bridgerton (phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of an influential London family, through the marriage season of 1813. During this time, the elite families in society hold parties and charity events where young ladies and gentlemen try to find their match over a period of 60 days. After being named ‘the diamond of the wedding season’ Daphne is not only on the search for marriage, but also for true love.
As the wedding season continues, a very eligible and handsome Duke –Simon Bassett Regé-Jean Page– arrives. While many fall to their feet to get the Duke’s attention, Daphne does not do the same. Meanwhile, a gossip newspaper is released by a mysterious Lady Whistledown who writes about the scandals of each family. To avoid slander, Simon and Daphne team up to help each get through the season. What started off as a simple friendship begins to blossom into something more, but not without its up and downs.
Although the show is a captivating period piece, the friendships and relationship drama throughout the show are what will keep you wanting more. Even as we follow our main characters, Daphne and Simon, we also follow a few of Daphne’s siblings as they navigate their way through this tricky wedding season as well. Not only do we follow the Bridgerton family, we also follow the Featheringtons who are another high class, but less respected family in the community. The show is perfect for anyone who is looking to escape the real world for a few hours and be transported into a world of corsets and high-society parties.
Since the Netflix show is based on a series of books, the showrunners expect to have another seven seasons, making it an eight season series. Although no final plans have been made as the show is still new to the platform, producers and cast members expect to be filming season two as soon a season two is renewed and everyone is safe to film again.
“Bridgerton” is a passionate, scandalous drama with unexpected plot twists that will have you binge-watching the eight episode season well into the night.
