Have you ever thought, “How early is too early to start planning for Homecoming?” The student body starts planning as early as two months before, regarding groups, dates, plans, and outfits. However, the Student Council starts planning in the peak of summer.
The Student Council had a camp at the end of June, voting for and planning the dance. Stuco does everything from picking a theme, decorating, setting up, and tearing down the dance.
Phineas Van Maanen, senior and executive chair of Student Council, explains what Stuco is in his own words.
“Student Council is an organization where we organize different events such as homecoming, blood drives, and community outreach,” Van Maanen said. “We’re sort of like a voice for the student body and we’re looking to get a stronger voice.”
Thanks to our student council and their preparation, our dance has an elected theme, “Carnival,” and a decoration committee committed to picking out and putting together different supplies for homecoming.
“We’ve done a couple meetings, created a lot of social media posts for Homecoming and right now we’re focusing on getting our decorations out,” Van Maanen said. “We recently got them all pretty much redesigned, so we’re working on getting those ordered, getting those in. Then we’re focusing on things like Buff Puff and Powder Puff and getting all those organized.”
Easy to say that the Student Council has had plenty of time to plan, but what about the student body? Is it too early to pick a dress or find a group?
“As a Stuco member, we’ve been planning since the summer, so I don’t think it’s too early to start planning the preparation and I feel like a month in advance is pretty good for a student to start planning stuff,” Van Maanen said.
Many students here at West have had a dress picked out, groups organized and more, weeks in advance. Homecoming is a big deal and there’s no such thing as ‘too early’ regarding this dance.
Addy Davis, a senior attending homecoming this year, shares her plan for the dance she’s had since October.
“I’m wearing a red sequined dress and white heels…I do have a group and we’ve had this group for about 2 weeks,” Davis said. “Day of, we plan on taking pictures at Antioch park at 5:30, then dinner at Garozzo’s at 6:30 and then get to the dance around 7:45-8ish.”
