It was finally homecoming week which meant pep assemblies, carnival, bonfires, Powder Puff, and of course, Buff Puff. Buff Puff is where roles flip, from girls playing volleyball to boys playing it while girl volleyball players coach.
The main gym was packed with students and faculty cheering, ready to witness amazing matches. The players took their places on the court while their coaches, members of the girls’ volleyball team, stood by their side. Reflecting on the energy in the gym, senior Allie Clayton couldn’t help but laugh.
“I think it was silly how into it all of them got,” Senior Allie Clayton said. “They tried their best and it was fun to watch them try and figure out what was going on.”
Getting into the event center, each player had to check-in and was given a shirt with the corresponding grade color: seniors pink, juniors blue, sophomores green and freshman yellow. After check-in, you had to create your own team, in total, there were eight teams that consisted of three senior teams, two junior teams, one sophomore team and two freshman teams. Freshman Carson Herrera represented one of the two freshman teams.
“I loved representing freshmen. I felt like we did really good,” Herrera said.
After a quick warm-up, the tournament began. The early games went to 25 points, and teams that dropped to the losers bracket played their final round to 10 points. The matches were competitive and filled with big swings, blocks, and even a few dramatic dives across the court. Senior volleyball player Maryn Russell commented on the bedlam.
“They have a mind of their own and they don’t know what’s going on half of the time, but they think that they do,” coach and senior volleyball player Maryn Russell said.
The final game was a battle, with teams Matt’s Crew and Futbol e Gringo, both senior teams, going back and forth in a long-lasting match. The crowd stayed loud until the final serve. In the end, Matt’s Crew pulled out the victory, taking home bragging rights and finishing off homecoming week with energy and excitement.
But more than the score, the event showed off the playful side of school spirit. Buff Puff once again gave students a chance to laugh, cheer and see their classmates in a whole new role.
