The film adaptation of “Project Hail Mary” was released on March 20, and its success in theaters‘ wasn’t surprising. The original book written by Andy Weir was published in 2021, and it didn’t take long for it to become a fan favorite.
The sci-fi adventure/comedy follows middle school science teacher, Dr. Ryland Grace, as he gets drafted for an urgent space mission called Project Hail Mary to save Earth because the Sun is dimming. He has a background in molecular biology, which is helpful as he studies Astrophage, the cells that are causing the all life-threatening disaster. After working closely with Eva Stratt, the leader of Project Hail Mary under the efforts of the United Nations, Grace finds that he’s being forced to go on the mission because of his expertise and coma-resistant gene, which is needed to survive the 13 year interstellar trip to Tau Ceti. This was heartbreaking news for Grace; as it would be heartbreaking for anyone that wasn’t ready to sacrifice their life for the unknown.
From the beginning of the film, it immediately mirrored the book. We are introduced to the long haired Ryan Gosling who plays Dr. Ryland Grace as he rolls out of his induced coma. The scene is set—a space ship with a lonely man who isn’t an astronaut and has forgotten who he is and why he’s there.
A spot-on factor that the movie nailed: the comedy. Even in the book, Weir did a fantastic job at involving a sense of humor alongside the dramatic and dire situation of the vital mission of saving the world. Both the book and film had me laughing out loud, which is a rare occurrence.
Finally, the most heartfelt part of the film was the relationship between Grace and Rocky, the alien he befriends and works with to save Earth and his planet Erid. Both Earth and Erid are being impacted by the dimming of their star in their solar system, so they team up, combining the more advanced human science with the unworldly mechanical engineering of Eridians. Together they solve the problem and know how to stop the Astrophage’s damaging effects.
The film had a 200 million dollar budget and made over 140 million dollars worldwide on opening weekend. The large budget allowed Amazon MGM to make the best adaptation they could. On top of that, the marketing across multiple platforms lead to success in the theaters. ‘Project Hail Mary’ has had the biggest opening of the year so far, and it’s been the biggest opening for Amazon MGM. The overall success and adoration of the film was a massive victory for originality in Hollywood.
It was not a sequel, remake or reboot. Nor was it related to a franchise or big recognizable brand. “Project Hail Mary” was more original than most movies that studios are releasing nowadays, making it truly special. Hopefully it proves that original stories are worth writing, producing and releasing.
This ageless story of intergalactic friendship, the human spirit and relentless problem-solving has true value as it rekindled a flame among audiences for films they’ve never seen before and will never forget.
