On a balmy Wednesday evening, the smell of various food trucks was in the air. Students filed into the Olathe West bus lanes for the annual homecoming carnival, but one of the main events of the evening was the annual Powder Puff Football Game.
The junior and senior girls took to the turf for a competitive game of flag football. In a game that came down to the last drive, the seniors came out on top 26-12 and took home the trophy.
Even though the game didn’t end the way the team wanted, the junior team fought until the end. Many big plays didn’t go the juniors’ way, namely two separate rushing touchdowns of 80 and 63 yards respectively.
Despite the big rushing touchdowns, the defense did enough to keep the juniors in the game. Multiple stops at the goal line and an interception were the defining plays on defense for the 26’s.
Even though the juniors made the game close in the end, the seniors were in control for most of the 40-minute affair. The rushing offense for the seniors was the main source of the 26 points scored for the class of 2025, but the defensive front was also great.
The game came down to the wire when the juniors had the ball with two minutes left. The ball was on the seniors’ side of the field, and the juniors were driving for the tying touchdown. A touchdown and a two-point conversion would have sent the game to overtime. On a pass that the seniors intercepted, a pass-interference penalty was called, and the juniors were only 30 yards away from a potential overtime. As the juniors dropped back to pass, however, they found that nobody was open, and the ensuing pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown as time expired, which made the score 26-12 the final score.
The Powder Puff showdown during the Homecoming Carnival, and next year the class of 2026 will take on the class of 2027 during the carnival in 2025. The ‘26’s will look to avenge their loss this year and take on a new challenge in the ‘27’s.
